The biggest different between mineral and chemical sunscreens are the ingredients included in the formula that are providing the SPF. Mineral, or physical, sunscreen use active ingredients like Zinc Oxide, which sit on top of the skin to help physically deflect the sun’s rays. Chemical sunscreens use chemical active ingredients and are absorbed into the skin’s surface. Both sunscreen types can provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and different people prefer one over the other.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Two important things to keep in mind are that SPF is not a linear measure so SPF50 is not twice as effective as SPF25 AND layers of SPF do not add up – so using a moisturizer with SPF and a foundation with SPF does not mean you get the sum of their protection.
