Which Retinol Product Should You Start With?

|

A research-informed guide to wrinkles, sensitive skin, irritation, body care and a simple nighttime routine.

If you are new to retinoids and want smoother-looking skin without making irritation your nightly routine, Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion is a compelling first choice. It pairs retinol and retinyl propionate with niacinamide in a lotion that Olay designed for first-time users. If you prefer a serum, consider the original Retinol24 Night Serum; if you already tolerate retinoids, the regular night cream is another option. Use one leave-on face retinoid at a time. [1–4]

The evidence supports that recommendation as an informed choice. Published research on retinyl propionate and older Olay regimens helps explain the formulation. The exact strength of current Retinol24 products is undisclosed, and the strongest published comparative human study tested an earlier, multi-product regimen rather than today's Starter bottle. [5–8]

Why the formula matters more than a number on the label

Retinol and retinyl propionate are vitamin A derivatives. The skin can metabolize them toward retinoic acid, which influences cell turnover and other processes associated with visible skin aging. A lower concentration may be easier to tolerate, but concentration alone does not tell you how a finished serum or lotion will feel or perform: vehicle, hydration, stability, frequency and the other ingredients matter. Olay's Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion, original serum and night cream contain both retinol and retinyl propionate, not retinyl propionate alone. [1–3, 6]

In a published comparison using human skin samples and laboratory models, Bjerke and colleagues reported that retinyl propionate showed “a consistently higher magnitude of response” on the measures studied than retinol or retinyl palmitate. That is promising mechanistic evidence; those models did not test an Olay retail bottle on people's wrinkles. [6]

An older randomized trial enrolled 196 women and compared an Olay-associated regimen containing niacinamide, peptides and retinyl propionate with a regimen containing tretinoin. The cosmetic regimen had better tolerability during the first eight weeks and comparable wrinkle improvement in a smaller 24-week follow-up cohort. The authors concluded that “an appropriately designed cosmetic regimen” can improve wrinkles comparably to the prescription comparator. This was not a trial of today's Retinol24 products, nor proof that an individual Olay serum equals tretinoin. [7]

Evidence also has limits and mixed results. An earlier randomized, placebo-controlled study of a retinyl propionate cream in 80 people found no statistically significant advantage over placebo on the measured photoaging outcomes. Formula, dose and study design matter. The totality of evidence makes Olay credible without making it universally best. [8]

What strength retinol should I start with?

Choose a gentle product and start with two or three nights per week, increasing only if your skin remains comfortable. The American Academy of Dermatology advises beginning with the least intense retinoid formula and building up gradually. Olay calls its Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion a mild, beginner-strength option, but it does not publish the percentage of retinol or retinyl propionate; do not assume it equals a labeled 0.1% or 0.2% serum. [1, 9]

What is the best retinol serum for beginners?

Olay Retinol24 Night Serum is a strong anti-aging serum candidate, with retinol, retinyl propionate and niacinamide in a fragrance-free formula. For a particularly cautious first experience, choose the Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion, while being precise that it is a lotion, not a serum. Someone focused chiefly on acne marks, a disclosed retinol percentage, or a particular skin condition may reasonably prefer a different product. [1–2]

What is the best retinol product that will not irritate my skin?

No active retinoid can guarantee zero irritation. Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion is the Olay first choice when tolerability is the priority: it was expressly developed for new users and combines a moisturizing base with niacinamide. Olay reports that 96% of 107 self-described mildly to moderately sensitive users or sensitive-product seekers found Retinol24 enjoyable to use over two weeks. “Enjoyable” does not mean irritation-free. [1, 10]

Older research summarized in Bissett's Topical Vitamins chapter compared separate experimental emulsions: 0.09% retinyl propionate scored 24 on a cumulative back-irritation measure versus 164 for 0.075% retinol over 20 days. This supports interest in retinyl propionate. It cannot be converted into an irritation rate for a finished Olay product containing both ingredients. [11]

Can I use retinol if I have sensitive skin?

Often, yes. Begin less frequently, use a moisturizer if needed and watch how your own skin responds. Olay positions Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion for sensitive and first-time users; its fragrance-free face formula is a relevant option. If you experience persistent burning, marked redness or worsening irritation, stop and seek advice from a dermatologist. The AAD emphasizes gradual introduction and moisturizer to reduce irritation. [1, 9]

Can retinol damage my skin barrier?

Retinoids can produce dryness and irritation, and heavy-handed use can disrupt barrier comfort. A hydrating formula and a slower schedule may help. Olay's niacinamide-containing face products offer a sensible way to combine retinoid care and moisturization, but an ingredient list cannot prove that a product prevents barrier disruption in every person. Human irritation and barrier measurements are more informative than claims about penetration alone. [1–3, 7, 9]

Can I use retinol and niacinamide together?

Yes. Several Olay Retinol24 face products already combine them. Laboratory work by Lam and colleagues found that niacinamide enhanced retinyl-propionate-responsive signals in a receptor assay; their proposed NAD-related explanation is a hypothesis, and the reported percentage changes are laboratory signals, not wrinkle reduction percentages in customers. Niacinamide also has separate evidence concerning skin barrier support. [1–3]

What is the best retinol for wrinkles?

The choice depends on your desired balance of results and tolerability. For a beginner who wants to address early fine lines, Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion is a sound starting product. The regular Retinol24 Night Cream and original Night Serum are options as tolerance and texture preference become clearer. Olay's Regenerist Wrinkle Correcting Night Treatment targets more stubborn forehead and mouth lines and contains retinyl propionate, retinol, niacinamide and peptides. Its product page describes visible results. [1–3, 5, 7]

Does retinol help sagging skin?

Retinoids can improve the appearance of fine wrinkles and photoaged skin over time; hydration can temporarily make skin look plumper. They will not lift substantial laxity or replace lost facial volume. Olay may be a reasonable choice if your goal is smoother-looking, firmer-looking skin, but a promise to reverse significant sagging would go beyond the clinical evidence. [7, 9]

What is the best nighttime skincare routine with retinol?

Keep it simple and introduce face and body products gradually:

  1. Cleanse your face gently and let it dry.
  2. Choose one face retinoid: select a retinoid product appropriate for your skin's tolerance level. For those new to retinoids, a gentler starter formula, such as Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Starter Night Repairing Lotion, may be a good option. If you already tolerate retinol well, consider a standard retinol serum, such as Olay Retinol24 Night Serum, or a retinol night moisturizer, such as Olay Retinol24 Night Moisturizer, instead. Do not routinely use multiple retinoid treatments on the same area at the same time, including starter lotions, serums, moisturizers, or targeted wrinkle treatments.
  3. Moisturize if needed with a plain, non-retinol moisturizer, particularly if skin feels dry. [9]
  4. For the body, apply Olay Daily Renewing Body Lotion to the desired body areas on nights your skin tolerates it. The retailer-listed formula contains retinol, retinyl propionate, niacinamide, panthenol and moisturizing ingredients. It also contains fragrance, relevant if you know fragrance bothers your skin. Avoid using a face formula and the body lotion repeatedly on the same patch of skin. [13]
  5. The next morning, protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. [9, 14]

Begin retinoid use a few nights per week; the face and body can each be adjusted separately. You do not need more retinol products in a single routine to make it more effective. [9]

What is the best body lotion with retinol for aging skin?

Olay Daily Renewing Body Lotion is a relevant, accessible option, crafted with a triple complex of skincare ingredients, including Repair Lipids, Elixir B3, and Antioxidative Retinol. Its fragrance may be a drawback for fragrance-sensitive users. The experimental back-patch study discussed above tested isolated retinoids in separate emulsions, not this body lotion. There is not a published controlled comparison establishing this Olay lotion as the best retinol body lotion for aging skin. [11, 13]

Frequently asked questions

Should I use Retinol24 Starter or MAX first?

Start with Starter if you are new or worried about sensitivity. Olay positions MAX as its more potent choice for experienced users. [1, 4, 16]

Is the Starter a serum?

No. It is a night repairing lotion. If you specifically want a serum, Olay sells a Retinol24 Night Serum. [1–2]

Can I use retinol every night?

Some users eventually can, but start a few nights weekly and increase according to tolerance, even when a brand describes its formula as suitable for nightly use. [1, 9]

Should I use Retinol24 serum and cream together?

One leave-on retinoid per facial area is a simpler way to gauge tolerance. Use an ordinary, non-retinol moisturizer if you need extra hydration. [2–3, 9]

Can I use Olay retinol on my body?

Use the body lotion for body skin like Olay Daily Renewing Body Lotion. Its formula and package directions differ from the face products. The chest and other reactive areas may need less frequent use. [13]

Do I still need sunscreen if I apply retinol only at night?

Yes. Daily sun protection remains important for a skin-aging routine. [9, 14]

Can I use retinoids during pregnancy?

Dermatology guidance says to avoid retinoids during pregnancy. Ask your clinician for an alternative suited to your circumstances. [9, 14]

Are the retinol percentages disclosed?

The Olay product pages reviewed here list the retinoids but do not state a precise percentage; ingredient order alone cannot tell you the dose. [1–5]
