Myth or Fact: Looking Good Is Expensive
By Maritza Perez, MD
Myth: You have to spend a lot of money to take good care of your skin.
Fact: Skin care does not need to be expensive to be effective.
For the optimal care of your skin, you need a few basic products that cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize, repair and protect. A good cleanser is one that will clean and moisturize your skin while also helping to exfoliate without being harsh or abrasive. Products with such qualities should be soap-free and may contain beta or alpha hydroxy acids.

A good moisturizer is one that holds moisture to your skin without irritating it. And it helps reduce the noticeability of damage inflicted by the environment, especially the sun. There are also products available that moisturize, have sunscreen and have anti aging ingredients.
Anti aging products contain vitamins and/or antioxidants. To protect your skin from the sun, a moisturizer should contain broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with at least an SPF 15. These products can have physical and/or chemical sunblock ingredients and should be non-comedogenic (won't clog pores).
