The New Wrinkle
Research brings skin discolorations into the light.
Leading behavioral biologists Drs. Bernhard Fink and Karl Grammer teamed with skin expert Paul J. Matts to measure the impact of facial skin discoloration on the perception of female beauty.
According to their study, brown spots, dullness and uneven tone are vital determiners of age, attractiveness and health – perhaps even more than wrinkles! Why? Because the human eye tends to forgive fine lines and wrinkles as a natural part of the aging process. Skin discolorations, on the other hand, are perceived in a negative light.

Olay sheds new light on anti-aging.
The science of beauty is ever-evolving. Olay is at the cutting edge. Through a partnership with
Astron Clinica, a renowned skin care research facility in Cambridge, UK, Olay has developed and refined a revolutionary new technology called SIAscopy. This amazing science helps us understand why – and how – the human eye perceives a person to have a “youthful glow.”
Today, Olay is leveraging leading-edge science called SIAscopy to evaluate the skin’s condition under the surface with new precision. Learn more about SIAscopy and skin tone.
The Three Chromophores
Through SIAscopy technology, researchers identified the three chromophores responsible for skin discolorations and uneven texture: melanin, hemoglobin and collagen. By targeting the root causes of skin discoloration, scientists could work to improve what the human eye perceives as old looking: brown spots, dullness and uneven tone. It’s out of this new understanding of aging that Olay Definity was born. Learn more about the science of aging.
Definity reduces the appearance of age spots by 78% in
just eight weeks.
In a recent study conducted by Olay, we evaluated and compared
the effect of a facial treatment moisturizer regimen containing
niacinamide and N-acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) versus a vehicle control
regimen on the appearance of hyperpigmentation and
uneven skin tone in female subjects. A test pool of more than
200 women between the ages of 40 and 60 years old was used.
During the eight-week treatment period, 100 subjects were given a nighttime cream and an SPF 15 daytime lotion that contained niacinamide and NAG, and 100 subjects were given the vehicle nighttime cream and the vehicle SPF 15 daytime lotion. The subjects were instructed to apply these products to their faces each day in the morning and at night. At the end of the study, their skin was evaluated using the Skin Tone Analysis System for changes in the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and overall skin texture.
The study revealed that the Essential Glucosamine Complex:
• Demonstrated significant benefits at reducing the visible spot-area fraction over the placebo at six and eight weeks.
• According to expert graders, demonstrated significant benefits at slowing down or preventing an increase in color noticeably at week six.
• Significantly better than baseline at weeks six and eight for visible melanin spot area fraction.
• Significantly better than placebo at weeks six and eight for melanin evenness.
• Significantly improved skin barrier function over baseline and placebo at weeks four and eight.
• Evened skin tone.
• Reduced the appearance of discolorations in 8 weeks.
• Reduced the appearance of age spots or hyperpigmentation.
• Reduced the appearance of discoloration by up to 78 percent in just eight weeks (vs. the base moisturizer in clinical trial).
• Reduced the appearance of discolorations you can see.
• Significantly reduced the look of both melanized hyperpigmented spots (age spots) and uneven melanin distribution (uneven skin tone).
